The Beginning of Cadbury

The story started in 1824 when John Cadbury opened a grocer’s shop in Birmingham. Being a devout Quaker, John didn’t drink alcohol; he preferred the sweet taste of hot chocolate. He prepared this treat himself, grinding the ingredients in a pestle and mortar to share with his discerning clientele.

John's sons took over the business and introduced a much-improved cocoa into the UK. Using a revolutionary cocoa press from the Netherlands, they removed much of the cocoa butter from the bean. This technique breathed new life into the business, kickstarting the journey we enjoy today.

The Birth of Dairy Milk (1905)

Inspired by Swiss chocolatiers, George Cadbury Jr. was challenged to create a bar with more milk than any other on the market. While the Swiss used condensed milk for sweetness, British versions used milk powder. George succeeded, and when a customer's daughter suggested the name 'Dairy Milk', it was an instant hit.

By the start of the First World War, Dairy Milk was Cadbury’s most popular product. By the 1920s, it was the number one chocolate bar in the UK—a position it still retains 100 years later.

How It's Made: Bean to Bar

Cadbury sources cocoa from Ghana. Cocoa trees produce pods containing 30-40 seeds. It takes one tree’s entire annual crop to make just 500g of cocoa! The beans are fermented to develop flavor and dried in the sun before shipping.

Beans are roasted and broken into "kibbles." The shells are blown away, leaving the seed "nibs." These are ground into a thick liquid called cocoa mass.

The cocoa mass is combined with sugar and fresh, full-fat condensed milk, then dried in ovens to create the famous "Cadbury Crumb." This is the base for all Cadbury chocolate.

Every day, over 250 tonnes of crumb arrives. It is rolled for smoothness, tempered for shine, moulded into bars, cooled, and wrapped. Fun Fact: The factory can wrap 64,800 bars of Dairy Milk in just one hour!
