The Pulpit in the Boardroom: 7 Strategic Reasons the Marketplace is God’s Next Frontier

The Pulpit in the Boardroom: 7 Strategic Reasons the Marketplace is God’s Next Frontier

Written By: Oudney Patsika | Role: Founder & Editor-in-Chief, Pastors Toolbox

If God has called you into business, do not apologize for it. Do not wish you were called somewhere "holier." The marketplace is not a distraction from ministry; it is the primary engine for kingdom advancement in the 21st century.

Oudney Patsika - Marketplace Ministry
"The church is the showroom; the marketplace is the test drive."

The Mission Field is Open

Today, regular church attendance is plummeting globally. At current rates, it is projected to drop significantly by 2050. But here is the good news: the people who aren’t coming to church on Sunday are still waking up every Monday to go to work. Your office, your factory, and your boardroom are the new mission fields. The harvest is not in the pews; it is in the marketplace.

At least 85% of the Christian workforce spends 60-70% of their waking hours in the marketplace. This is where our spiritual gifts should be operational. We are not called to huddle in holy bunkers; we are called to salt the earth. The ministry potential of Christians using their gifts collaboratively in business is the greatest untapped resource in the Kingdom.

Real Discipleship & Authenticity

Let’s give our pastors a break. How much discipleship can truly happen during a two-hour service? Discipleship—becoming like Jesus—happens in the grind of everyday life. The potential for ministry investment during a 40-hour work week far strips what is possible in a Sunday lecture. Marketplace leaders have the unique privilege of walking out faith in real-time.

The local church is the showroom for Christianity. The marketplace is the test drive. Before buying a car, you want to see if it functions on the road. Daily, our unbelieving co-workers watch us to see if this "Christianity" actually works under pressure. Since most people aren't visiting the showroom anymore, we must be the living proof of concept on the road.

Personality-driven Christianity fails in the marketplace. We need every joint to supply. Whether you have an apostolic gift for business expansion or a pastoral gift for HR management, the marketplace demands the full body of Christ to function. The "one-size-fits-all" approach produces ineffective Christians; we must leverage unique spiritual gifts for corporate transformation.

Unity and Economics

We can choose our church denomination, but we rarely choose our co-workers. The marketplace forces us to work with Christians from different theological backgrounds. This environment dilutes petty denominational differences and opens the door to collaborative, Kingdom-focused ministry that transcends tradition.

Everything gets funded from the marketplace. All money comes from value created in business. Business professionals ultimately decide what gets funded in the Kingdom. These leaders need to know God’s plan for their lives to make righteous financial decisions. Business is not just the ATM of the church; it is the vehicle for transforming society.
