No Strategy, No Survival: The Harsh Truth Every SME Must Face

The Architecture of Growth: Why Strategy is the SME's Only Survival Kit

We are officially back in "strategy season"—that time of year when companies pack their bags, book a lodge, and go "plan the future." Some travel with laptops. Some travel with flip charts. Some travel with cooler boxes.

Oudney Patsika on Strategic Planning
"Strategy is the vehicle. Size is just the destination."

And SMEs… ahhhh, the SMEs usually say: “Strategy is for big companies, isu tiri vadiki (we are too small).” Let me tell you a truth so sharp it can slice through your 2026 vision board: Big companies are big BECAUSE they strategized. They didn’t start strategizing because they became big.

The Myth of "Too Small to Plan"

If you are an SME and you don’t plan, then you are basically running your company using a dangerous formula: Faith + Vibes + Luck + Miracles.

Most small business owners say: "I will plan when the business grows" or "Planning requires a consultant we can't afford." My friend, strategy is not the Nyamapanda border post. You don’t need a passport to visit it. Even a vendor selling on the streets of Harare can—and must—strategize.

Strategy is simply answering five questions:

  1. Where are we going?
  2. How will we get there?
  3. Who is responsible?
  4. What resources do we need?
  5. When will we do it?

The Ritual of Failure (Corporate Tourism)

Let me show you what many SME strategy sessions actually look like:

Day 1: CEO says, “We want to dominate Africa.” Team claps hands. No one asks how.

Day 2: Someone suggests: “We need a website!” Everyone writes it down like it's the second coming of Jesus.

Day 3: People are tired and want to go home. “KPI? Yes.” “Budget? Next week.” “Who is responsible? Ahh tichazviona (we'll see).”

Then the retreat ends. The only thing that grows is the waistline because of the resort food.

Many companies come back with a beautiful 50-page document and zero implementation. Three months later, the strategy document is lying in someone’s drawer under old invoices and expired receipts.

"Strategy must be followed by EXECUTION. Otherwise, you are just doing a corporate vacation."

The Practical Execution Roadmap

If you don’t do the following, you are doing wishful thinking, not strategy:

  1. Define your mission: What problem are you solving?
  2. Set clear goals: Assign owners and deadlines.
  3. Allocate resources: A goal without a budget is a hallucination.
  4. Define KPIs: You cannot manage what you do not measure.
  5. Review Monthly: Hold people accountable and reward performance.

A small business without strategy is like a Kombi without brakes. You are moving fast, yes… but nobody knows where you are going, or when you will crash.

Strategy gives direction, prevents mistakes, saves money, and unites your team.

The Bottom Line

"You cannot grow beyond what you plan for. A company with no strategy becomes a company with no future."

As you prepare for 2026, remember: Don't waste those three days. Don't waste that resort money. Don’t waste your team’s energy. Plan, review, execute, and grow.
