The Khabanes were already traumatised by the death of their uncle but when his coffin arrived at their home, they were in for another shock. The family from Vosloorus in Ekurhuleni was horrified to find the body of a woman in the coffin!

Mpho Khabane (25) said her uncle, Diphapang (36), died at a neighbour’s house last week.

“His body was taken to a government mortuary and a post mortem had to be conducted to determine the cause of death,” she said. “When the body was released on Tuesday, Zamokuhle Funeral Directors took it.”

Mpho said when the coffin arrived on Saturday afternoon, they walked to the house where her uncle died to take his spirit home. After performing the ritual, they took the coffin and placed it in her aunt’s bedroom.

“We noticed the coffin had another person’s name on it. We were very shocked when we opened it and found a woman’s body inside,” said Mpho.

“The driver told us his job was to deliver the coffin and he didn’t know anything about the matter. When another hearse arrived two hours later, my uncle’s coffin was broken, exposing the body.”

Mpho said the driver reeked of alcohol and had a bad attitude.

Diphapang’s sister, Anna (50), said the undertakers had to give the family another coffin and ­prepared the body on the floor.

Jabu Dladla of Zamokuhle ­Funeral Directors said he had not heard about the incident.
