In a sweeping move to combat rampant drug and substance abuse, the Municipality of Chitungwiza has issued a strict 7-day ultimatum for the removal of all illegal pool tables and related structures operating at undesignated locations. The directive, dated 16 June 2026, targets hubs that have allegedly morphed into centers for illicit drug dealing, posing a severe threat to community safety and local youth.

ENFORCEMENT ACTION: The municipality has cited illegal pool setups at tuckshops, shebeens, and termini as fronts for drug syndicates.

Acting Town Clerk J. Nemuseso released the public notice following widespread concern over the proliferation of unregulated entertainment structures.

Targeted Undesignated Locations The crackdown specifically targets pool tables erected in residential areas, overnight parking sites, tuckshops, shebeens, road servitudes, and public transport termini.

Seven-Day Compliance Window All operators of unauthorized pool tables have been directed to dismantle and remove them, along with any related illegal structures, within seven (7) working days from the notice date of 16 June 2026.

Confiscation & Police Action Failure to comply will result in the Municipality forcefully confiscating the tables. Authorities have confirmed they will work closely with law enforcement agencies to ensure full compliance.

The Drug Link & Administrative Freeze

The notice stems from the 508th Ordinary Council Meeting held on Monday, 15 June 2026, seeking to protect the town's youth.

Threat to the Youth The Municipality received numerous reports indicating that these unregulated pool tables act as nerve centers for drug dealing and substance abuse, directly threatening public safety and destroying the future of local youths.

District Offices Ordered to Stand Down To prevent the relocation of these illegal operations, the Municipality has directed all district offices to immediately cease issuing permits relating to pool tables pending a comprehensive review of all existing permits.

Utano Day-Care Centre (Zengeza 4) The municipality is advancing plans to establish a specialized day-care rehabilitation center at Utano in Zengeza 4 to provide daytime counseling and treatment for affected youth.

24-Hour Centre at Tatenda Tavern For severe cases requiring round-the-clock monitoring and intensive reintegration support, a 24-hour rehabilitation facility is planned at Tatenda Tavern.
