Gabrielle Union has shared details of her first marriage to professional football star Chris Howard.
The Being Mary Jane actress confessed during a Monday appearance on the Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard podcast that her first marriage was simply horrible.
She freely confesses that neither she nor Howard were committed to their marriage.
“In our first marriage, neither one of us felt like the marriage should get in the way of our dating,” she remarked.
“A part of it was just keeping up with his activities, like, ‘Oh, that’s what you’re doing?,” Union added. You’ll experience this one,” and I suddenly felt entitled of it as well. I felt like these are the fruits of wealth while I was paying off all the bills and working tirelessly.”
She continued, “Like my dad before me, I believed, whoever has the most gets to do whatever the heck they want is what I thought,” attributing infidelity to how her dad handled matters. “It was simply dysfunctional from the beginning.”
In Florida, Union and Howard had a party in 1999; they later got married there in 2001. But it took them until 2005, four years later, to officially part ways.

However the therapist inquired as to how Union and Howard progressed past the courtship phase. “And [she said] we should probably look for a way to amicably dissolve…,” she replied. Because you share nothing in common, you have no values or principles, Union argued.
Currently married to former NBA player Dwyane Wade, Union and Wade have a 4-year-old daughter together named Kaavia. Wade’s three children from prior relationships have her as their stepmother as well.
