The Camel in the Tent: How Small Compromises Topple Empires
Insight By: Oudney Patsika | Topic: Values, Ethics & Business Strategy
Vijay Viswanathan was six years old when he first heard the fable of the Arab and the Camel. It is a story about boundaries, unintended consequences, and the subtle erosion of principles. In business and life, the "camel" appears when we least expect it.
The Warning
On a cold night, a camel asks his master if he can put just his head in the tent for warmth. "By all means," says the man. Soon, the camel asks for his neck, then his front legs. Finally, the camel asks to stand wholly within. When he does, there is no room, and the man is forced outside into the cold.
"We will all let the camel into the tent at some point—and when and how we do it should be a deliberate choice."
The Cost of Compromise
Google entered China in 2006, compromising on censorship to gain market share. But when the government began hacking Gmail accounts to hunt dissidents, Google realized they could no longer "do no evil." They exited, leaving over $400 million in annual revenue on the table. Values have a price tag.
Uber's "win at all costs" culture helped them crush taxi oligopolies, but the same arrogance led to sabotage of competitors and misogynistic scandals. The resulting brand damage proved that even with a great product, society does not give companies carte blanche to act without values.
The Trouble with Entropy
The Second Law of Thermodynamics states that systems move towards disorder (entropy). Perfume leaves an open bottle; weeds grow in a garden. Values are the same. Unless we actively apply energy to maintain them, they will erode into chaos. The British Banking system's shift from conservative to aggressive sales resulted in £38.5 billion in fines—a direct result of unchecked value entropy.
