The Law of Change with Oudney N. Patsika

As people begin to make progress in life, they get into areas that are uncomfortable and unfamiliar.

They start feeling a little funny on the inside and say, “Hmmm…this doesn’t feel right.” It’s like putting a shirt on that doesn’t quite fit yet because it needs to be stretched out a bit. I’ve seen people make the mistake of thinking this discomfort is a sign. They think that the Holy Spirit is telling them to stop, and this misinterpretation prevents many people from moving forward and growing into what God has for them.

When there is new wine, we must offer God a new wineskin. This new wineskin we offer God is a renewed mind. It means that we must have a spirit ready to change.

As we enter the third month of the new year, some of you may feel the calling to change. Some of you may feel led to an area where you are uncomfortable, but take heart, because change can be good.

I’m believing it will do you good this year.

The Law of Change:

1. UPGRADE YOUR SKILLSET: In 1978, I heard a story that really impacted my life and helped me define the Law of Change. It’s about two men, Duane and Gary. Gary was watching Duane fish on a pier in California and noticed something was curious. Whenever Duane caught a big fish, he would throw it back into the ocean, but whenever he caught a smaller fish, he would put it into his fish bucket to take home.

Gary watched Duane for a while until finally, his curiosity got the best of him. He walked up to Duane and asked him why every time he caught a big fish, he threw it back, but when he caught a small fish, he kept it. Duane replied, “I’ve only got a 10-inch skillet at home!”

Sometimes we can’t take bigger fish because we only have a 10-inch skillet. When we face challenges that we need to overcome in order to move forward, it’s time for us to follow the Law of Change. We must be willing to leave behind what is familiar and comfortable.

2. BE WILLING:In John 5, we read the story of the man at the pool of Bethesda. The man had been suffering for thirty-eight years, which is an incredibly long time. One day, Jesus came to a man and asked him an incredibly important question: “Do you want to be made well?”

This seems like a strange question to ask, but sometimes, like this man, we get so familiar with our limitations and so comfortable with our 10-inch skillet, when someone comes along and wants to help us get a new wineskin or a 16-inch skillet, we freeze. We feel uncomfortable.

If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good fo the land. - Isaiah 1:19

When God spoke these words through the prophet Isaiah, evidently, there were some people who weren’t willing and obedient, and because of that, they didn’t get to experience the blessing God had for them. We must be willing to grow and change.

3. EVERY CHANGE BEGINS WITH AN END: In order for you to change, something has to end in your life. For something to change, you must be issued a death certificate and a birth certificate at the same time. The death certificate is the passing of the old, and the birth certificate is the beginning of the new.

Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain. - John 12:24

I had a favourite food I used to eat all the time when I lived in Houston, Texas. When I was a kid, my mother would fix white rice and cream gravy. Let me explain cream gravy to you. The number one ingredient in a good cream gravy is the grease; pure animal fat. Not vegetable oil, not olive oil, and certainly not extra virgin olive oil. I’m talking hardcore animal fat!

When I began to get an understanding of the law of change, however, I actually had a funeral for rice and gravy. I took my minister’s portable communion set and headed into the kitchen, and said, “In Jesus’ name, I say rice and gravy is dead to me. I bury you in my life, in Jesus’ name.” Then I took communion.

What area of life do you feel the calling of change in? Think about logical steps you can take to upgrade your skillet, become more willing, and allow the end to come.
