A Zimbabwean Pastor Under Fire in South Africa

Allegations of Extortion and Borrowing
The women accuse Prophet Makwara of extorting money, either by promising blessings or by borrowing from them and their relatives. "He is targeting a certain type of people that he believes are rich," said Norma Mbali, speaking for the group. They also allege that consultations with the prophet were costly, with one member stating, "A single consultation with the prophet costs R1000... Reading a scripture costs R1000 for false blessings."
Ambrith Ndlovu claims the prophet owes her family over R600,000. "It was not a donation, he promised to pay back the money," she said. She alleges he borrowed R200,000 from her brothers and flew to Mpumalanga to convince her brother-in-law to lend him R400,000 to buy a farm.
The Pastor's Defense
Prophet Makwara has rubbished the allegations, claiming it is a personal vendetta because he refused to have sex with some of the complainants. "I never killed or destroyed anybody... Have I made people eat snakes, eat grass or jump on top of people? What wrong have I done?" he stated.
"Some of them wanted to sleep with me. They have labelled me as a false prophet and have colluded for the same purpose," said Makwara.
Protests and Protection Orders
According to a report by Sunday World, the women staged a "toyi-toyi" protest at the church premises but were stopped by bouncers. In response, Makwara obtained a protection order against them. The women have now enlisted the services of DMO Incorporated Attorneys to demand back almost R1-million in cash, as well as church equipment they say they donated, including a pulpit, sound system, and chairs.
