Tijani Usman (26) may have been regretting while he decided to get married as his wedding ceremony at Niabawa Quarters, Kano, Northwest Nigeria turned sorrowful when six of his friends in the spirit of jubilation drugged themselves to death.
Tijani who wedded Hafsat Ibrahim aged 18 is now a sad man in Police custody as he is being questioned over the death of his friends who took to taking dangerous drugs while others were eating and drinking during the reception.
According a source who spoke to P.M.NEWS Correspondent on phone, the dead were aged between 19 and 25, “it was, indeed, a tragic incident. While other people were enjoying themselves with food and soft drinks during the reception; little did we know that the six young men who were close friends to Tijani locked themselves in a room and were busy sniffing themselves to death.
The six young men popped in wild jubilation over their friends wedding as they took over-dose of illicit drugs in the spirit of celebration and eventually died in the process.
The incident happened at Naibawa Quarters during the reception of the marriage ceremony.
“All was going well as everyone was in a happy mood. There was enough to eat and drink. Invited guest, both young and old were in high spirit, but little did we know that the young men had engaged themselves in drug-taking competition which later resulted to their death. It was a tragic experience that would take time to get off the memory of those who witnessed it,” said an eyewitness.
The police, however, arrested the groom for question as the case is currently under investigation.
Kano state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Magaji Majia confirmed the incident on phone, saying, “nobody reported this tragic incident to us but we were able to get information from residents and we swung into action and subsequently arrested Tijani Usman, the groom who is currently being questioned.”
Kano had been rated very high in terms of consumption of illicit drugs but Kano state Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Garba Ahmadu has declared that the agency in the state has been able to bring down the wave of drug traficking and abuse in the state.
He commended the effort of the state governor, Engr. Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso who he said has been supportive to NDLEA in terms of provision of logistics, vehicles and other equipments needed to fight drug abuse and traficking.
According to him, between January and February this year, the agency in Kano arrested 100 drug trafickers and users, convicted 28 and counselled 28. He further revealed that 430.858kg of illicit drugs were seized by the agency in January, while in February, 429.383kg of dangerous drugs were also impounded.
“I must tell you that we are winning the war against drug traficking and abuse here in Kano. Unlike before, when you go to the streets and bad joints and see all these bad boys; they are no longer there because our men are working round the clock combing all those bad joints like Kofar Naisa, Gidan Murtala, Jakara, Kofar DanAgundi, Kofar Mazuga and Sabon Gari.
“We are also engaged in comprehensive counselling and rehabilitation packages supported by Governor Kwankwaso who have provided a rehabilitation complex for the Agency in Kiru Local Government Area. “On this note, we urge traditional rulers, religious leaders and parents to help NDLEA and Kano state government in this concerted war against drug traficking and abuse in the state, because when this is done, the society will be better and our youths will become more productive and focused in whatever goal they set out to achieve in life,” the NDLEA boss stated
