"Econet is Unusable in my Area," Yet everyone is Still on Econet. Why?
The latest POTRAZ numbers help explain this phenomenon. It isn't just about signal strength; it's about the sheer volume of people trying to breathe through the same digital straw at once. As a Brand Architect, I look at how these numbers translate into "Sweating the Network"—and why Econet's biggest strength is also its greatest weakness.
Econet has 3x more subscribers than NetOne but only 1.2x more base stations. This creates a high-pressure environment where equipment is pushed to the limit, especially during the "Prime Time" bottleneck.

The Digital Infrastructure Audit
The latest data reveals a massive disparity in how many users are allocated to a single point of access.
Econet vs. NetOne vs. Telecel
Leaving out 2G and focusing on the base stations that matter (3G, LTE, 5G): Econet has 4,162 sites compared to NetOne's 3,389. When calculated against their subscriber bases, Econet averages 3,000 users per station, NetOne averages 1,200, and Telecel sits at a quiet 670. Econet is carrying a load nearly 3x heavier than its closest rival.
Gridlock in the Neighborhood
A road can handle many cars, but if everyone leaves work at the same time, it becomes a parking lot. That is Econet at 6 PM. Signal bars remain high, but the throughput is zero because everyone is streaming, hotspotting, and calling simultaneously.
Econet is clearly "sweating its network"—pushing its infrastructure harder than any other player in the market.
Heavy Usage vs. Network Stability
The issue isn't just more users; it's heavier users. Econet handles 7x more voice traffic and 4x more data than NetOne. This extreme asset utilization explains why they dominate financially, but it also creates the "Texin Experience"—neighborhoods where the network is functionally unusable during peak demand because capacity hasn't kept pace with subscriber growth.
While Econet users struggle with congestion, NetOne and Telecel users enjoy "breathing room"—but that is a business failure in itself.
The Unused Acre
If Econet’s tractor is plowing seven acres, NetOne’s is plowing one. While the NetOne experience is smoother for the few users they have, it indicates that their massive infrastructure is being significantly underutilized. They are failing to "sweat the equipment," leading to a lower return on investment compared to the Econet juggernaut.
The Brand Architect's Verdict
"Econet’s strength and weakness are the same thing: Success. It is a victim of its own popularity."
Heavy usage is why Econet dominates, but in many areas, it is also why the customer experience is deteriorating. Until the investment in base station capacity matches the aggressive subscriber growth, the "Main Line" will remain a congested highway during the hours Zimbabwe needs it most.
