How a True Prophet Lost His Way: The Danger of Building on a Gift
A Teaching By Apostle Arome Osayi • Word vs. Gift
The Spectacular Trap. In this profound exploration of Apostle Arome Osayi’s teachings, we uncover why spiritual gifts are powerful tools but dangerous anchors. While visions and prophetic ministry offer glimpses into the supernatural, they lack the stability required for a lifelong spiritual foundation. This is the cautionary story of a genuinely gifted prophet who prioritized supernatural experiences over biblical obedience, ultimately paying a heartbreaking price for neglecting scriptural grounding.

Building on the Word. True spiritual maturity is not measured by the accuracy of a revelation, but by one's alignment with the Word of God. When making critical life decisions—especially in Christian marriage and ministry—your prophetic accuracy cannot compensate for a lack of character or scriptural roots. As Apostle Arome Osayi masterfully illustrates, believers must learn to distinguish between the excitement of a spiritual gift and the enduring stability of a life built strictly on what God has said.
The Core Lesson
Your prophetic accuracy cannot compensate for lack of grounding. When choosing a spouse or making life decisions, let Scripture lead you, not emotions, excitement, or even spiritual gifts.
The Man with the Closed Bible
Years ago, I had a very close friend. He was genuinely gifted, a Prophet among us. In our fellowship, I was known for teaching and grounding people in Scripture. I labored in the Word; he flowed in the prophetic.
He would come to meetings carrying a large Bible, place it on the pulpit… and never open it. The moment he was given the microphone, he would begin to prophesy... clear, precise, and powerful words. His accuracy was undeniable. But there was one issue: he did not study the Word.
The Danger of "My Lane"
One day he told me, “If I don’t see a vision, I can’t move. Until God shows me something, I won’t act.”
My Warning to Him:
"Brother, you’re starting to depend on your gift. We’re not sustained by gifts; we’re sustained by faith, by the Word of God. Don’t build your life on what God gave you. Build your life on what God said."
He disagreed. He felt I spoke that way because I was strong in Scripture. He believed his strength was in visions and prophecy. According to him, that was his "lane." I wished him well.
"I Married a Witch"
While we were deepening our roots in the Word, he continued living by his gift alone. Gradually, his prophecies began missing the mark. Then he introduced us to the woman he wanted to marry. Those of us grounded in the Word sensed something wasn’t right.
When we raised concerns, he responded boldly: “If there’s any seer here, it’s me. God showed me. In matters like this, I don’t need advice — I am a Prophet.”
Years later, he came to see me in another city. I barely recognized him. He looked frail and broken.
“What happened?” I asked.
“My wife has destroyed me,” he said. “I married a witch.”
That night was heavy. The vibrant Prophet I once knew was gone. His gift had dried up. The visions he once boasted about had ceased. Even when I tried to help him financially to restart his life, the money disappeared. The same destructive pattern continued. I realized I could not rescue a man who refused to build on the right foundation.
The Foundation Must Be The Word
Don’t chase the spectacular and ignore the foundational. It is the Word of God that must guide your choices, especially in marriage.
Obedience Over Experience
Your spiritual experiences cannot replace the bedrock of obedience to Scripture.
Grounding Over Accuracy
Your prophetic accuracy cannot compensate for a lack of scriptural grounding.
Roots Over Wonders
Instead of running after the “supernatural,” stay rooted in the Spirit through the Word.
Build on the Word. Stay with the Scriptures.
