You Lost Me Long Before I Walked Away — In the Moments I Stopped Trying to Be Understood
Written By: Oudney Patsika, Business Growth Architect.
When you lose a loyal person, you don't lose them in the moment they physically walk away. You lose them long before that. You lose them in the silence, in the shift, in the part of them that stopped trying to understand you.

Reflecting on my 15 years of service and the abrupt end that followed, I realized something profound. I didn't leave impulsively. I left internally first. I disconnected quietly, observing what was shown to me, not what was said. And once that clarity settled, the attachment began to fade.
Leaving Before I Left
The physical exit is just a formality. The real departure happens in the mind.
When I received that suspension letter—riddled with errors and carelessness—I didn't storm out immediately. I sat in silence. In that silence, a part of me stopped trying to justify their actions. A part of me stopped trying to understand why.
The loyal person doesn't leave you impulsively. They leave internally first. They stop fighting for the relationship because they realize they are the only ones fighting.
It Wasn't About Caring Less
People think the loyal one leaves because they stop caring, because they stop wanting to give, or because they've given too much. That's not true.
I left because I finally understood. I understood the patterns, the intentions, and the behavior. That careless letter wasn't a mistake; it was a revelation. And once it all made sense to me, my loyalty no longer bound me to the organization.
Why We Stayed So Long
And here's the part that really stings. A person like me will give chance after chance—15 years of chances—not because we are naive, but because we genuinely hope you'll rise to the version of yourself we saw in you.
We stay because we believe in the potential of the relationship or the organization. But once that hope dies—killed by a lack of due process or basic respect—so does the connection.
The Final Verdict
When they finally asked to "sit down and talk," it was too late.
When you lose the loyal observer, you don't get a warning. You get distance. You get silence. You get the version of them that has nothing left to explain.
Because I had already accepted the truth. And once a person like me accepts the truth, there's no return. Not out of anger, but out of growth. Not for revenge, but for peace.
And that loss... you feel it long after I'm gone.
