Roots of a Sungura Trailblazer
The Senior Lecturer's Journey
Nicholas "Madzibaba" Zakaria began his journey in the 1970s townships of Mazowe armed with nothing but a guitar, faith, and stubborn determination. From these humble beginnings, he rose to become a cultural elder who shaped the sound of a nation.
The Foundation
Before the fame, there was the grind of the 1970s townships.
As Zimbabwe approached independence, Zakaria was instrumental in shaping the Sungura genre. His sharp, interlocking guitar lines provided the soundtrack for workers after long shifts, blending traditional rhythms with modern instrumentation.
Zakaria’s calm authority on stage earned him the nickname "Senior Lecturer." Unlike many of his peers, he kept his lyrics grounded in everyday struggles, marriages, and township morality. His apostolic faith heavily influenced his clean image and strict discipline.
The Legendary Outfit
KHIAMA BOYS
Founded 1984
Co-founded in 1984, the Khiama Boys became a legendary outfit. Their hits packed beerhalls and growth points across the country, establishing them as one of the most successful bands in Zimbabwean history.
Mentor of a Generation
Around his rehearsals, young hopefuls gathered with battered instruments and big dreams. Zakaria welcomed them but insisted on punctuality, practice, and respect.
- Alick Macheso: As a teenage bassist, Macheso learned arrangement, bass craft, and how to command a live crowd under Zakaria's tutelage.
- System Tazvida: passed through the Khiama Boys before forming his own legendary band.
Consequently, half the sungura scene carries traces of Zakaria’s teaching. He rarely boasted about this impact, preferring to build bands and tutor quietly.
A Lasting Legacy
5 DECADES
Enduring Influence
Zakaria’s career stretched nearly five decades, riding out economic crises and shifting technologies. His music remained a staple in buses, barbershops, and village shops until the end.
"New guitarists still study his lines. Older fans measure new releases against classic Khiama Boys albums. Nicholas Zakaria left sungura more confident, creative, and proudly Zimbabwean."
Rest in Peace, Madzibaba
