Created in 1909 by Charles Gordon Maynard, whose father was a strict teetotaler (didn't drink alcohol). Charles had to convince his father that the recipes contained no actual wine. They were named "Wine Gums" to appeal to adults as a sophisticated treat to savor, naming them after fine drinks like Port, Sherry, and Champagne.
