From Rejection to Redemption
Born in 1957, Evangelist Saungweme was the third born in a family of eight. Rejected by his father as a child, he spent his youth with his grandmother in the rural area of Mbeza, Mutare. Named Zuvarimwe ("One Day") due to his fragile health, his family never imagined he would live to stand before multitudes. The turning point came at age 18, on the very day he planned to take his own life, when he stumbled upon a crusade and gave his life to Christ.
"When I came to know the Lord, I felt others should also know Him," he recalls. "He released me from poverty, rejection, curses and I felt and still feel that many others must know Him." Armed with an accordion and a gas lamp, he traveled from one rural village to another, preaching the gospel and seeing many saved.
A Global Ministry Takes Shape
A paradigm shift occurred after he attended a Reinhard Bonnke crusade in 1982, inspiring him to think bigger. This led to the founding of Jesus For Africa Evangelistic Ministry (JFAEM). What is remarkable is that for over 40 years, the evangelist has not received a salary, yet has managed to fend for his family while holding mass crusades around the world, a testament to his life of faith.
Considered not very bright in school and having barely gone through primary education, Evangelist Saungweme worked against all odds to become a highly educated leader. Through sheer determination, he earned a Psychology degree, a Masters in Leadership and Change Management, and a Doctorate in Christian Ministry.
The Principles of Lasting Leadership
Evangelist Saungweme teaches that true leadership is a process of social influence that maximizes the efforts of others toward a goal. He warns against leaders who start well but end badly, citing the biblical example of Joshua, who, at the end of his ministry, focused only on his own house ("as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord") instead of the entire nation he was called to lead.
He stresses that a leader must think in terms of a bigger constituency and succeeding generations. "What legacy are we leaving behind?" he asks. He points out that soon after Joshua's death, Israel descended into chaos, where "every man did that which was right in his own eyes." Lasting leadership, he argues, requires departing from nepotism and keeping the big picture in mind to avoid leaving a legacy of disorder.
