As an Award-Winning Business Growth Consultant, I’ve dedicated my career to building High Performing, Hyper-Profitable Businesses that are Systemized, Optimized, and Scaled.
My work involves guiding entrepreneurs through complex challenges, transforming obstacles into opportunities for exponential growth. Recently, I had the privilege of listening to a profound teaching by Dr. Ned Nedziwe that resonated deeply with my understanding of sustained success. His central message: "Valleys are not for the process of time, but are the passages of process."
This insight fundamentally shifts our perspective. Instead of viewing valleys as unfortunate detours or wasted periods, we begin to see them as divinely orchestrated pathways, essential for building character, fostering deep growth, and preparing us for the promotions that lie ahead.
This insight fundamentally shifts our perspective. Instead of viewing valleys as unfortunate detours or wasted periods, we begin to see them as divinely orchestrated pathways, essential for building character, fostering deep growth, and preparing us for the promotions that lie ahead.
This isn't just spiritual wisdom; it's a critical framework for anyone navigating the demanding journey of entrepreneurship and life.
God's Systems: The Unskippable Process of Growth
Dr. Nedziwe emphasized that life, much like business, operates in cycles, series, and sequences, all unfolding according to a divine will and plan (Ecclesiastes 3:1). As Genesis 8:22 reminds us, "While the earth remains, seed time and harvest, cold and heat, winter and summer, day and night shall not cease." God is the ultimate master of systems, and His management of these systems often involves putting us through a process.![]() |
Conquering the Valleys of Life and Business – Passages of Divine Process |
The core message for us is crucial: whatever you do, do not skip the process. Even when it's uncomfortable, challenging, or seemingly unfair, every avoided part of the process inevitably returns, demanding fulfillment. Just as you cannot advance to Form One without graduating Grade Seven – regardless of how smart or capable you believe you are – you must go through the necessary stages. This requires trusting God's unique process for your life, not your own, not external expectations.
Dr. Nedziwe even encouraged humility: if necessary, go back and correct foundational issues, even in areas like marriage. Acknowledging and rectifying past omissions or missteps in your foundation is vital for future stability and prosperity. (Isaiah 26:3, Deuteronomy 33:24, 1 Corinthians 10:13, Ecclesiastes 3:1, Genesis 8:22)
The Valley: A Forge for Character, a Hub for Production
Valleys are often perceived negatively – as low points, trials, or times of testing. However, the Bible reveals their profound significance. Dr. Nedziwe highlighted that valleys are typically places of agriculture, commerce, and economic activity. People settle in valleys, cultivating livelihoods, unlike the barren peaks of mountains. This symbolism extends to our lives: the valley is where our daily existence, our productivity, and our livelihood are rooted. Therefore, it is precisely where opposition, including spiritual attacks, often occurs, because that's where your life is being built and refined.Character, fundamentally, is built in the valley. While mountaintops are for exhibiting the character you've cultivated, the valley is the crucible where it's forged. It's a place of growth, trial, testing, and preparation. Being in a valley is not a sign of sin or failure; it simply means you are in process, learning vital lessons.
Scripture illuminates this through various valleys, each teaching a unique lesson:
1. The Valley of the Shadow of Death (Psalm 23)
- Significance: Symbolizes extreme fear, danger, despair, and profound difficulty. It’s the lowest of low points.
- Lesson: Despite the darkness, God's constant presence removes all reason for fear. "Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me." Knowing He will never leave or forsake you is your ultimate comfort and strength, regardless of circumstances.
2. The Valley of Elah (1 Samuel 17)
- Significance: The literal battlefield where young David faced and defeated the giant Goliath. It represents confronting overwhelming challenges and territorial battles.
- Lesson: Valleys are often battlegrounds. If God leads you here, it's to fight and conquer your giants. Provision, wisdom, and weaponry are available in this valley to deal with issues. The Philistines, representing spiritual opposition, often appear at "harvest time" to steal your labor's fruit. Like David, you possess the spiritual "ammunition" (five stones and a sling) to end these territorial battles.
3. The Valley of Achor (Joshua 7)
- Significance: Meaning "valley of trouble." This was the site of affliction for Israel due to Achan's disobedience in taking forbidden plunder from Jericho. It symbolizes "Jericho things" – seemingly attractive but ultimately destructive elements that corrupt one's spirit and bring collective consequences.
- Lesson: In your process, you must leave behind "silly things that can corrupt your spirit." These are often small, seemingly insignificant compromises. Disobedience, even by one, can lead to widespread trouble and affliction. It highlights the absolute importance of adhering to divine instruction and letting go of anything, however "nice," that is not aligned with God's will for your growth.
4. The Valley of Dry Bones (Ezekiel 37)
- Significance: A vision of utter despair, representing extreme dryness, difficulty, stagnation, and a place where one is humbled to their lowest point. It’s a period of desperate seeking where ordinary methods yield nothing.
- Lesson: Even in the most desolate, seemingly hopeless circumstances, God has the power to bring life, restoration, and renewal. It demands digging deeper in seeking God ("Lord, I have nothing else but only You"). It's where humility is learned, and desperation becomes the catalyst for profound spiritual breakthrough and refreshment.
5. The Valley of Baca (Psalm 84)
- Significance: Meaning "valley of weeping." It represents a season of sorrow, tears, or distress that we must inevitably pass through.
- Lesson: Weeping is a natural part of the process. Even in tears, God's presence can transform the valley of weeping into a place of springs, leading to renewal and strength. It's about finding hope and building resilience amidst sorrow, trusting that every tear shed contributes to growth.
6. The Valley of Jehoshaphat (Joel 3)
- Significance: Prophesied as the "valley of judgment," where God will judge the nations.
- Lesson: This symbolizes a divine reckoning, where spiritual harassment and unrighteousness will ultimately face judgment. It reminds us that despite unfair treatment by spiritual adversaries, God is the ultimate Judge who will deliver justice for His children.
7. The Valley of Berakah (2 Chronicles 20)
- Significance: Meaning "valley of blessing." It was where Jehoshaphat and Judah gathered to praise God for their miraculous victory after a battle where they simply stood and watched God fight.
- Lesson: After a period of struggle and divine intervention, the valley transforms into a place of thanksgiving and immense, unexpected blessing. It teaches that God provides and covers in the process, leading to overwhelming joy and celebration.
Attitude and Action in the Valley: Keys to Unlocking the Next Level
Your attitude in the valley is paramount. Valleys are rarely pleasant, and your response shapes your outcome. Remember:- No Hurry, No Shortcuts: Don't rush for instant gratification like Achan. Patience and obedience are critical. Avoid trying to gain things prematurely or through unethical means. (A Mercedes-Benz without a home is a premature gratification that leads to trouble.)
- Embrace Humility: Be humble in the valley; it's where true character is proven. Trouble reveals who you truly are. Those daily irritations – traffic, minor setbacks – are your daily tests. Learn the lessons from "little foxes" that spoil your vine; they are never huge, but subtle, persistent tests. (Joseph in prison is a prime example of character under duress.)
- Learn the Lessons of Each Level: Wherever you are, master that level. If your income is X, learn to manage, tithe, and give at that level. This prepares you to graduate and move forward. You are continually tested on next-level issues in the valley to prepare you for promotion.
- Be Permanently Committed: Don't remain a "temporary" person or in a "temporary" position forever. Move forward, grow into permanence in your chosen path.
- Manage Jealousy: When others seemingly "overtake" you – even those who haven't paid the same price – do not become jealous. That sets you back to the beginning of the process. God allows these things as part of your valley process (Matthew 20). Don't judge your process; in the fullness of time, He makes everything beautiful.
- Engage in the Process: A valley is not a place to passively wait. It demands active engagement. Be a diligent student of God's movements. Read, study, pray, and watch His direction. If you're not learning, you risk being left behind when God moves.
- Valleys as Unexpected Provision: Even in the deepest troubles, God provides mana (daily provision) and even quails (unexpected blessings). He does not abandon you; He provides and covers you in your process, provided you are engaged.
- Avoid the "Don'ts": Do not grumble, complain, murmur, disengage, blame God, be impatient, take shortcuts, or allow "chihuahuas" (unnecessary minor issues) to derail your process. Control your tongue; our words can derail our progress. (Numbers 14:28-30)
The Valley: A Place of Preparation for Your Next Level
The valley you are walking through is fundamentally a place of preparation. It's where you get ready for your next level, your coming increase. (Isaiah 40)- Joshua in the Desert: He trained an army in the desert (their "valley" of preparation). When they entered Canaan, Jericho, the biggest obstacle, fell easily because they were ready.
- Elijah at Brook Cherith: God hid and prepared Elijah in the valley. You might feel delayed or hidden, but it's often because you're not yet ready for what's coming. Prepare now, because increase is coming.
- Joseph in Prison: Prepared through the pit, Potiphar's house, and prison for the palace. He didn't know what he was preparing for, but he was being prepared for something monumental.
- Moses in Pharaoh's Palace & Jethro's Pasture: Forty years in each, unknowingly preparing for a divine assignment.
- Christ in the Desert: Prepared for 40 days and nights for His ministry.
God often shows you the vision (the end, like Canaan), but not always the map or the full process (Isaiah 40). His presence – the pillar of fire by night, cloud by day, the Holy Spirit – is your guidance. Trust His direction.
Attitude at the Mountain Top: Sustaining the Blessings
You will get to your mountaintop. Your purposes will be fulfilled. But once there, remember:- Gratitude and Covenant: Don't forget who brought you there, the covenants you made, and the vows you took. Manage your resources wisely for the inevitable "valley seasons" that will come.
- New Economy: The "manna" stops when you reach your border; you now have your own means of commerce. New, higher-level battles will begin; discard the "silly wars" of the past. These are battles of possession and expansion.
- Evident Transition: Your life will clearly transition. Hard things will become doable. Doors you never imagined will open. Those who hated you may find peace with you (like the Gibeonites with Joshua).
- Gifts Activated: Your gifts and giftedness will become more transparent and impactful. You'll be "discovered" as it's your time.
- Divine Encounters: God will speak in new ways – like Moses at the burning bush or Paul on the Damascus road. Certain unnecessary things will become unpalatable, leading to "circumcisions" or cutting away of old habits (your "chihuahua" things) for the next level.
Embracing Every Phase: Why Your Greatest Growth Happens in the Low Places
There are things we must leave behind in the desert or the valley – in our relationships, character, mannerisms, tongue, dreams, memory – if we are to truly transition. You are prosperous even in the valley; prosperity is more than just money.![]() |
Conquering the Valleys of Life and Business – Passages of Divine Process |
The God who promised is faithful. He will take you through appointed processes for a purpose. Even the Valley of Achor, a place of trouble, can become a pasture (Isaiah 65:10) and a door of hope (Hosea 2:15). May every crooked place in your life be made straight, and the rough places smooth, because your God has shown up. Your strength will equal your days. (Deuteronomy 33:24)
May God bless, heal, and help you, guiding you through every valley with His power and grace. Amen.
