When the Shepherd Falls: The Silent Crisis of Pastor Suicide
Written By: Oudney Patsika, Steward of Vocation & Business.
Last week, the world witnessed a paradox that is becoming all too common. A California mega-church pastor and ardent mental health advocate, Pastor Jarrid Wilson, took his own life merely hours after officiating the funeral of another suicide victim.

| A tragic loss: The late Rev. Berry Dambaza. |
And while the footprints of grief were still fresh in California, Harare was plunged into its own tidal wave of mourning. Reverend Berry Dambaza, a Senior Pastor at PAOZ Upper Room Ministries, tragically fell to his death from the 4th floor of a city building.
These events force us to confront an uncomfortable truth: Loving Jesus doesn’t always cure depression. And standing on the pulpit does not exempt you from the pain of being human.
A Tale of Two Cities
From California to Harare, the narrative is heartbreakingly similar.
Unbeknownst to the world, Pastor Wilson tweeted just hours before his death: “Officiating a funeral for a Jesus-loving woman who took her own life today. Your prayers are greatly appreciated for the family.”
He was a beacon of hope who had famously stated, “Loving Jesus doesn’t always cure suicidal thoughts.” Yet, even the advocate struggled to survive the dark nights of his own soul.
In Zimbabwe, Rev Dambaza’s death sparked intense speculation. Was it financial pressure? Was it infidelity? Or was it the burden of caring for a sick mother?
While the police investigate and the tabloids speculate on suicide notes and rumors, the core tragedy remains: A man who spent his life pouring into others found himself empty.
The Burden of Perfection
Pastors live in glass houses. They are always under the watchful eyes of church members. The congregation often forgets that pastors are merely human, expecting superhuman feats of endurance, wisdom, and morality.
The unrealistic expectation that pastors and their families must "walk on water" creates a pressure cooker of disappointment and disillusionment, which can be lethal.
Pastors are hard on themselves. As role models for their flock, they are often too isolated by life on a pedestal to talk honestly with others. Who do you confess to when everyone expects you to be the confessor?
Spiritualizing Mental Health
Chuck Hannaford, a clinical psychologist, notes a dangerous trend: pastors reducing depression to strictly spiritual problems. A significant portion of the church believes prayer and Bible study alone can overcome mental illness.
This theology can be fatal. It prevents leaders from seeking medical or psychological help for fear of being seen as "spiritually weak."
Who Pastors the Pastor?
It is time to stop being spectators and start being supporters.
Perhaps it is time believers stop expecting pastors to be anything more than frail and fragile human beings like them. We must seek ways to share the load.
Rather than sit back and watch pastors burn out from exhaustion, volunteer. Become a contributor instead of a consumer. Take care of your pastor. Seek to be a safe, nonjudgmental person who your pastor can come to when he or she is hurting.
And to the pastors: Please, do not struggle alone. Your worth is not in your title, your sermons, or your congregation's approval. You are loved for who you are, not just for what you give.
