Marie Callender, a California woman started baking pies at home for a delicatessen and turned that into a chain of 146 restaurants and a frozen-entree business.
Mrs. Callender got into the food business by chance, answering a delicatessen’s help-wanted ad, then making pies for the business at home.
1. Marie Callender began as a help or maid in the small shop.
2. The small shop was almost going out of business and Marie Callender asked her boss for the permission to bring just one of her pies to the shop… Just one pie..!
3. She got the permission to bring the pie to the small shop and the pie was finished in one day.
4. The next day she came with two pies and the pies were finished in just one day..!
5. The demand for Marie Callender’s pies grew until the shop owner persuaded Marie Callender to start her own baking business and sell him pies.
6. Marie Callender, her husband and son set up shop in Long Beach in a rented Quonset hut and began selling pies in 1948.
