A schoolgirl from Zimbabwe's second city of Bulawayo has appeared in court three months after she gave birth in secret and hid her baby in her school bag where it died, the state-controlled Chronicle reported.

The 17-year-old was a pupil at Eveline High School, a well-known secondary school in the centre of the city.

The Chronicle said yesterday that she gave birth at her home in Nkulumane on 31 January.

The girl's sister found the baby in a bag in the girl's wardrobe and called her mother, who saw that the child had already died.

She has been charged with concealment of a birth.

Last September a girl at another high school in Bulawayo gave birth to a baby in the school toilets. A teacher heard the baby crying and the girl was taken to hospital.
