Ire as rape accused get bail.

Durban - One of three University of Zululand students accused of raping another student on campus last month has walked free after the charge against him was dropped because of insufficient evidence.

The other two were released on bail of R1 000 each. They appeared in the Mtunzini Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

Their case was adjourned to April 24 and will move to the Empangeni Regional Court.

The pair are accused of raping a 20-year-old student at the East Block residence on March 20 after spiking her drink at an off-campus party.

Tuesday’s bail ruling has ruffled feathers within the IFP Women’s Brigade in the Uthungulu district.

Chairwoman, Mathomane Dlulane, said they were not satisfied with the accused getting bail because the complainant, who is a member of the IFP-aligned SA Democratic Students Movement, would be subjected to the trauma of seeing them on campus.

“Although the argument brought forward for their bail application was that the campus is huge and the odds of them bumping into the victim often were slim, the reality is they cannot all be going to the same campus and not see each other for over a week or two,” she said.

“It is not going to be an easy situation for the victim.”

Police spokesman, Major Thulani Zwane, confirmed that the suspects were granted bail of R1 000 each and instructed to appear next at the Empangeni Regional Court.
