Durban - A Durban policewoman was arrested at the Hong Kong International Airport for drug trafficking last weekend. Named as a Sergeant Zungu, she is believed to be based at the Durban Harbour’s SAPS operational response unit.
Police spokesman Major Thulani Zwane said: “We can confirm that the sergeant was arrested for drug trafficking in Hong Kong.
“When any police officer is caught for such an activity, they are immediately suspended and an investigation conducted.”
A source with intimate knowledge of the arrest, who could not be named because he is not authorised to speak to the media, alleged that the woman was transporting drugs from South Africa with her Nigerian boyfriend when Hong Kong authorities apprehended her.
The Department of International Relations confirmed it would also be investigating the matter with the relevant authorities.
Spokesman Nelson Kgwete said he could not divulge any further details regarding the incident.
“All I can say is that if she was caught, our mission in Hong Kong will investigate the matter and let us know its outcome,” said Kgwete.
The Sunday Tribune was told by Zungu’s colleagues at the harbour department that she was away on leave. They did not know when she was due to return.
The matter has been reported to Interpol.
