Good morning children of God! Mangwanani vana vaMwari! Hareruya vanhu vaMwari!
Children more often have the edge to twiddle, fiddle, jiggle and wiggle their hands, fingers, legs and feet. Any mother can tell you she has lost count of how many times she told her child, “Be still!” or “Dzikama, garisika!” “Kamwana aka hakagone kugarisika ungati kanobaiwa-baiwa!” To us the adults, when God tell us to "Be still, and know that I am God," we tend to misinterpret it along the above principle as if He is saying, "settle down, stop fidgeting, and be quiet."
What does it mean when God’s own are commanded to “be still”? The command is not given to restrict the mobility of God’s people. The duty represents a spiritual relationship that ought to resemble those to whom God’s unfailing promises have been given. We are commanded to do so and believe because of God's mighty wonders and His absolute greatness for He is the Lord Almighty!
God is not calling us to be quiet, bow our heads, and fold our hands. He is telling us to, "STOP!" We are so busy doing it our ways. Busy being in control of situations based on our wisdom. We are busy fixing all the problems through our own effort. We are busy fighting God's battles. We are busy keeping up with everything in line with modern times. We are busy correcting all the wrongs made by us and others. We are busy solving all conflicts and dealing with all the hurting people. We are busy building His church. We are so busy that our lives contradict our words. We say He is Lord. We say He is Almighty. We say He is God. But we live as if we are the God! God is frankly calling out for us to STOP our frantic, feeble, feverish, frenzied effort at making it all work and being in control! It is as if we are saying we can do it all on our own with the help of other gods. It is now as if Satan has more power than God, as if wicked gods are more rewarding than God the Almighty. Many have lost hope in our God.
Vazhinji vanoona Satan, seanesimba kudarika Mwari. Kana maproblems auya unonzwa voti, zvinoda kufambirwa. Kupiko? Kukingdom yaSatan. All problems come from the devil and the devil is the king of darkness, so how can darkness push away darkness?
Am I speaking to you somebody?

As God’s children, imagine your 6 year old son trying to fix a tyre puncture of his mountain-bike, or your 7 year old daughter trying to stitch her worn-out baby doll. Worse still, imagine your 12 year old son saying tomorrow he is not going to school because he must work to clear the outstanding water bills. Whether rich or poor family, we have seen children being “still” at all times. When you see young boys playing soccer on their way home, you can hardly tell that amongst them are those who have been told not to come to school the next day because of non-payment of fees. Their calmness is not that they do not like school but they keep “still” because they know their father or parent will take care of it. Ndiani akamboona mwana wake akajega dama agere pachicorner after telling you about his favourite pair of shoes or her desired beautiful dress?

So as your world crumbles around you, the call from Scripture is, don’t flinch in faith in God. Stand still and know Him as Abbah, the source — not because of a self-made confidence, not because you are the most composed person in the face of disaster, not because you can keep a cool head under immense pressure, not because “you’ve seen it all.” Be still because of what you know about God - Abbah.
Spiritual serenity ought to be cultivated in spite of the shaking mountains and restless waters of our lives. This spiritual calmness, that God commands, does not come from a lack of troubles but it derives from a steady, deep reflection on the ways God has intervened in history on behalf of his people.
The second part of the command is, "and know that I am God." He is saying, "Let me be God." This second part is dependent upon the first and the two together bring a specific result. Until we stop our self-effort attempts to do it all, we do not really know God as God. We must relinquish control and let Him be God in our lives.
This is no light suggestion. It is not a simple request. Nor is it a friendly proposal. It is a direct command from God. That is why this passage leaves us with the piercing question - If God is God why are we living our lives at this break neck speed, heart wrenching, mind blowing, unhealthy fashion? Or, why are we living as if God doesn't exist?
When we do stop and let God be God in all things there is a specific result - "I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth." God is not glorified through lives that are lived as if He doesn't exist. God is exalted, revealed, and glorified through the lives of people who are still and letting Him be God. Lives that are the channels through which He accomplishes His work. Lives that have found their refuge and strength in Him alone. Mwari vanogara murumbidzo dzevana vavo. Yes beloved, we need to "Be still and know He is God."
