A 19-YEAR-OLD Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) accounting student, Thelma Mupatsi, could not handle the outcome of having unprotected sex and therefore decided to kill her newly born baby, it is alleged.
The teenage student appeared in court on Saturday facing an infanticide charge after she allegedly killed her newly-born baby and hid the foetus in a suitcase.
Mupatsi, a first year accounting student, was not asked to plead to the infanticide charge when she appeared before Chinhoyi magistrate Singadu Jele.
She was remanded to today on free bail after she told the court that she could not raise any bail money.
It is the State case that on October 30 this year, Mupatsi gave birth to a baby boy inside her campus hostel and drowned the baby in a bucket of water before hiding the body in her suitcase.
There were also reports that she actually burnt the baby to death with hot water before stashing the foetus in a suitcase.
The issue came to light when her roommate, one of the five State witnesses, who was aware that Mupatsi was pregnant discovered some blood traces near the suitcase.
She in turn informed the university staff and police, leading to Mupatsi's arrest.
