Lovemore Kadzura in Rusape
A BUHERA man who was fully aware of his HIV status but went on to rape his employer’s eight-year-old daughter was slapped with an 18-year jail term. Nesbert Mbedzi (23) of Mupambwe Village, Dorowa, was sentenced to 18 years in prison by Rusape regional magistrate Mr Livingstone Chipadza, who suspended three years of the sentence on condition of good behaviour.
Mbedzi, a self actor, pleaded guilty to the offence and when quizzed by Mr Chipadza why at his tender age he was already infected by the disease, he said he once lived at Chivhu Growth Point where he engaged the services of sex workers in nightclubs.
Prosecutor Mr James Wirima told the court that Mbedzi raped the Grade One pupil barely 12 days after being engaged as a herdsman by the girl’s parents.
“On September 10 at around 3pm, the young girl arrived from school and found Mbedzi alone at home. Mbedzi persuaded the minor girl to accompany him to look for donkeys in the grazing fields.
“Along the way he raped her. When they returned home the complainant reported the matter to her aunt who later made a police report leading to Mbedzi’s arrest.
“The accused person was medically examined and found to be HIV infected as evidenced by his medical cards,” said Mr Wirima.
In sentencing Mbedzi, Mr Chipadza said his moral blameworthiness was very high and there were very high chances that the innocent young girl could have been infected by the virus.
