Buhera man kills wife and commits suicide

A BUHERA man last Friday gruesomely hacked his wife with an axe following an altercation over groundnuts before committing suicide. Kumbirai Chikwanha (32) of Bhasvi Village in Chief Chimombe’s area allegedly axed his wife, Tabeth Mlambo (25), once on the forehead and twice on the back of her head.

He allegedly left the axe stuck on her head before she died a few minutes later. Kumbirai was found hanging from a tree branch in a nearby bush two days later. Police confirmed the murder which left villagers in Buhera in a state of disbelief.

“We urge couples to resolve disputes peacefully and maturely. If they fail to find common ground, they should seek third parties like elders to resolve their disagreements. Seeking professional counselling is also an important solution to avoid unnecessary loss of live,” Manicaland provincial police spokesperson Inspector Enock Chishiri said.

He said around 6am on the fateful day, Kumbirai arrived home from an unknown place and realised that Tabeth was not around. She, however, arrived minutes later carrying groundnuts.

“Kumbirai asked her where she was coming from and she told him that she was coming from a friend’s house to collect some groundnuts,” said Insp Chishiri.

Kumbirai, in anger, demanded to see the friend. “An argument ensued and he struck her head several times before disappearing from their matrimonial house. The couple’s daughter followed him.

“He told his daughter that he was going to take his own life. The child alerted other villagers as well as the police. They conducted a search and his body was found hanging from a tree branch two days after the incident,” Insp Chishiri said.

Meanwhile, jealousy led a Buhera man to kill his wife after suspecting her of having an extra-martial affair. The incident happened last weekend in Muzhingi Village under Chief Makumbe.
Police confirmed the incident and appealed to members of the public with information leading to the arrest of Gibson Muzhingi (40) to contact their nearest police station.

“Alice Maribe (35) was coming from her brother’s funeral from Masvingo when she met her fate.
“She prepared dinner for the family, but Gibson refused to eat it. He accused her of sleeping around. They slept in separate rooms. During the night, the infuriated Gibson woke up and stormed into a room where Alice was sleeping. He started assaulting her with a wooden axe handle on her face,” said Insp Chishiri.

Gibson’s step-son heard the latter crying and rushed to where the couple was. Alice was already dead. Gibson disappeared from the scene and has never been seen. manica post
